Taking a long flight has its perks and downfalls. While it’s exciting traveling to a new place, the flights can sometimes become dull and irritating. I like to keep as busy as possible on a flight, making it go by faster and keeping me calm. Some of my favorite tips keep my mind and hands distracted. I also have tips for flying with a pet here!

Candy + Meal Time

If you’re lucky enough to fly first class, they will obviously include your meals. When I’m flying coach, I like to bring something packaged that will last a few hours before being eaten. No matter which class I’m flying, I also love to bring lots of candy and gum! This gives me something to secondarily focus on. Keeping my mind occupied. Whether I’m reading a magazine, watching a movie, or on my phone. I find snacking or chewing gum distracts me for at least a little while. Plus its yummy. Win-win.

Reading Material

I switch up reading material from books to magazines. I like to purchase a few magazines to read in case there’s no Wifi on the flight for some reason. The magazine keeps me busy while the excitement of the flight dies down. Once I’m bored with reading those, I’ll take a break and work from my phone/laptop or watch a movie. Once I’m bored with the digital world, I’ll go back and read a book. This takes my mind away  from the plane and once again, distracts me from the oh-so-boring flight. I normally bring a book with me and purchase magazines at the airport. However, I should purchase both beforehand to save money. Convenience gets the better of me.

Digital Distractions

If you’re blessed with Wifi on the flight, this can consume your entire trip. Without ever needing another distraction. Hello social media. JetBlue now actually offers FREE Wifi on every single one of their flights. Hallejulah. I like to bring my MacBook for work, when switching off from my phone. Having both keeps me the busiest. I also do this when working from home, so it’s a normal situation. There are also movies on most flights now. I like to time my flight by watching movies too. For example, I’ll read for as long as I can. Then watch a movie (about 2 hours down), then have a snack/meal, distract with my phone/laptop then watch another movie (2 more hours cut off). This honestly makes the time fly by. (No pun intended, or was it?)

Keep Moving

I get up to stretch my legs, stand up a bit, and use the ladies room every 1-2 hours. This helps circulation as well as keeping the body busy. I normally get extremely restless on flights and need to move around when possible. I love the aisle seat because of this reason! I don’t recommend doing this if you have a middle or window seat. Unless you don’t mind disturbing your fellow seat mates.

Sleep It Off

Some people can fall right asleep on flights. This is especially true for red eyes. I have always wished I could sleep on flights. I normally end up falling half asleep, and then waking up in a jolted gasp with a few people looking over at me. (Embarrassing). Consequently, I personally do not like to sleep on flights and prefer a day time trip. But I do know plenty of people who will sleep for most of the journey as if it was nothing. So, if you can sleep in public, then definitely do so. You will wake feeling refreshed and have extra energy for the trip ahead.

This red topic came to light in my thoughts after a self-described Christian described a conspiracy theory one night. The theory, about halfway through, mentioned something about lust, good vs. bad, heaven and hell. Immediately my brain started paying attention again. This triggered my emotions deeply. Is lust bad? Are any of the “deadly sins” actually bad? For us, or the people around us? Let’s dive into this one sin by one.

Lust: A natural human desire, created in our bodies, designed for humans to procreate. Without lust, there would be no desire to expand our community. While, we may mate as other animals do; humans were lucky enough to be gifted with pleasure. So why is this considered sinning?

Gluttony: Sure, some of us may over eat, indulge, or satisfy a craving. But is craving food bad? Is letting yourself taste what you desire truly a negative action? Yes, it may result in being overweight and unhealthy if taken advantage of. But who the fuck are you to judge another person for what they eat?

Greed: What I also like to call motivation, inspiration, drive, being a boss, the list goes on. Greed drives us to work harder for what we want. If we didn’t have greed, we would all be contently satisfied with a boring, dull life. Enough said.

Sloth: The avoidance of physical or spiritual work. I don’t know about you, but when I’m feeling a bit sloth-like, I’m probably depressed on some level or incredibly overwhelmed with the amount of things going on in my life. It’s healthy to take a break, or a lazy day when needed. But relaxing on the couch day in and day out, with no goals, hobbies, or work… that may be a problem.

Wrath: An emotion. Another natural human emotion stemming from birth. If I met a person who was happy and content with themselves, their lives, and the actions/people around them all of the time – I would not be okay with that. Being angry is a natural state. If we didn’t know what anger was and learn what is appropriate to act on, and what isn’t, there would be no knowledge of what life felt like when we weren’t angry.

Envy: Compared yourself to others can easily contribute to bringing yourself down, and fast. But that’s not to say, that being envious of others can’ drive, motivate, or inspire you to be a better person. To be your best self, go after what you want, take slivers of what you like that another person has and apply it to your life. Envy, spite, and vengeance has been some of my biggest motivators. You may or may not realize it, but it’s probably one of yours too.

Pride: Last but not least. What is pride? Being proud. Since when is being proud of your accomplishments, assets, yourself, your goals, work ethic, hobbies, lifestyle – a bad thing? I sure as hell have a lot of pride. Let me tell you, being proud of myself and my life has also strengthened me to grow into a better person. It has also driven me, amongst many of these other devastatingly deadly sins.

Conclusion: In my opinion, these ‘sins’ are only deadly if they affect yourself or another person negatively. As long as you are happy, content, and live a satisfying life you love, you do you boo.

Glam Holiday Accessorizing

Dressing for the holidays is so exciting because luxurious pieces can be added effortlessly. The Girl Meets Pearl Necklace by 7 Charming Sisters is so versatile, it can be worn in the front or back. With the front version, I like to pair it with a V neck, preferably something lower cut. This necklace also works well with a holiday dress, as long as the shapes are appropriate. Wearing this necklace with a backless dress, or open-back garment is another fabulous way to style it. This immediately draws attention to the skin showing, as well as showing off the beautiful jewelry, elongating the wearer. The necklace is perfectly suitable both ways. The length of it hits me, personally, at my waist, while the connector lands at my lower neck.

I adore these earrings because they make the perfect stud. Dressing up for a holiday party with these earrings creates a subtle hint of glam. I love that the studs are square. This factor provides an elegant, sharper look.

Mustard yellow is a color I’ve struggled with, but have wanted to pull off successfully. The fit is so important when picking a color that stands out. It’s key to have a quality piece, such as wide leg trousers, high waisted bottoms, a fitted coat, or structured bag. This creates more of an effortless, chic look. Instead of a frumpy, I-don’t-know-what-I’m-doing look. This I found, has been the biggest problem for me. While it’s easy to come across a stand-out color that’s in good quality, it normally comes with a high price tag. I’ve found leaning towards high quality fabrics, cuts, and styles is the best way to wear mustard.

I used to think wearing black with mustard created a bumble bee effect. If done correctly, it pairs amazingly. I chose to wear mustard yellow high waisted, skinny pants with a black, velvet crop top. I added a gold and black statement necklace. The necklace adds a classic vibe to this modern look. I found it at a consignment shop, but I adore the Egyptian style it gives. Additionally, I wore my caged black heels to match the black top.

Another way to wear mustard yellow is with neutral tones. Pairing it with my white tee, and jean jacket was a perfect match for me. The jean jacket adds a bit more embellishment to accessorize with. I also liked how the jacket was shorter than the tee, giving more layers. The white tee was an easy choice for the mustard pants. It can be worn year round as well, depending on how it’s styled. For the winter months, a checkered, houndstooth, or possibly even leopard print would suffice for a coat and gloves. For the summer, a white tee with neutral brown or beige wedges and a bright, colorful necklace would look amazing.

A third way I chose to wear the mustard yellow pants would be with navy. This is especially great in the fall and winter months. I recommend a navy blazer with velvet blue booties.
